Remembering Professor David Needham: A Legacy of Faith and Impact
Portland, Ore., February 28th, 2024 – It is with heavy hearts that Multnomah University announces the passing of esteemed Professor, Rev. David Needham (1929-2024). For over four decades, Professor Needham’s commitment to teaching and devotion to his students left a lasting mark on Multnomah University.
Raised in a devout Christian household in rural Southern California, David Needham pursued his education with zeal, earning degrees from Westmont College and Dallas Theological Seminary. Following a brief stint in pastoral ministry, he joined Multnomah School of the Bible as a faculty member in 1963.
Throughout his tenure, Professor Needham’s passion for teaching and his unwavering faith endeared him to generations of students. His classroom was a sanctuary where worship, prayer, and theological insights intertwined. Through his teaching, he inspired countless individuals to pursue a deeper knowledge of Christ. Many recall his heartfelt prayers, describing them as conversations with a beloved mentor.
Professor Needham’s impact extends far beyond Multnomah’s campus. His words live on through his written works: Close to His Majesty, Birthright, Christian Do You Know Who You Are? and, How Does It Look from the Top of the Wall?. These books continue to impact readers with their profound insights into Christian faith and identity.
Multnomah University’s President Dr. Jessica Taylor expressed sorrow at the deep loss to the community, “We mourn this earthly departure and celebrate our brother entering paradise with the Lord he loved. His dedication to his students, his passion for teaching and his commitment to God’s word have shaped our community. I am grateful and inspired by his legacy of tenacious faith. Our hearts are with his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. May we all be as committed to God’s word, to loving others and to a life of impact as he showed us we should be.”
